Four Elements
The idea that the four elements (fire, water, earth and air) are the underlying building blocks of everything we know in the world was the cornerstone of philosophy, science and medicine for thousands of years.
The theory was first suggested around 450 BC and later supported and studied further by Aristotle.
Carl Jung saw the four elements as archetypes existing in the collective unconscious and thus present in everyone. In Jungian psychology, it is the degree of development of each of the four elements in our conscious mind balanced with the unconscious retention of the elements that determine our personality and attitude. Jung considered Fire and Air the active, masculine elements and Water and Earth the passive, feminine elements.
In early Buddhism, the four elements are a basis for understanding suffering and for liberating oneself from suffering. In alchemy, as in psychology, the goal is to develop a balance of the elements within the individual. Even Empedocles noted that those who have near equal proportions of the four elements are more intelligent and have the truest perceptions of reality.
Personal transformation and individual integration are dependent upon balancing the elements within the psyche, and the deeper relationships of the elements (whether they oppose or complement one another) determine whether we are basically happy and balanced or develop neuroses, phobias, and other psychological disturbances.

Three Modalities
There are twelve zodiac signs in astrology, three for each of the four elements (three fire signs, three water signs, three air signs and three earth signs). Each of the four elements represents a cardinal expression, a fixed expression and a mutable expression. These expressions are known as modalities or quadruplicates of the elements. The three modalities show us how the signs interact with the world around them.
The easiest way to understand the concept of modalities is to picture the element in three stages of its expression. Think of our lives: we are born, we live and we die.
Think of fire in its three life stages. You light a match to start the fire. You watch the fire to become brighter and hotter as it spreads. Finally, the fire is barely twinkling in the dark and is no longer hot or dangerous to come close to.
There are four seasons in the year. Cardinal signs start the seasons, fixed mark the middle, and mutable appear at the change of each season. Four elements multiplied by the three modalities equals twelve distinct energy fields and, therefore, the twelve zodiac signs.
Energy
Every atom in the human body is built of positively charged protons, neutrons (no change) and negatively charged electrons, which in return, correspond with the positive and negative energies of the universe (yang and yin).
The Nei Ching (one of the oldest known medical books) states, "The entire universe is an oscillation of the forces Yin and Yang." The Hermetic Principle of Correspondence
The planets of our galaxy are massive, heavenly rocks that influence our bodies here on earth. Crystals are massive, inner-earth rocks that also can influence our bodies here of the surface.
"As above, so below and as below, so above" is a universal law, and as such, the crystals that form below us also correspond to the planets that rotate and spiral above us. The right pillar (white) symbolizes the expansion or active energy (yang). The left pillar (black) symbolizes form, structure, contraction or passive energy (yin). The middle pillar is known as the pillar of consciousness or balance. The three pillars also represent our soul, body and spirit (also correspond with three modalities).
The 10 circles on the tree of life that correspond to the planets in our gallaxy are connected by the 22 paths, which in return, correspond to the 22 trumps of tarot in major arcana (also correspond with the 22 letters of the Jewish alphabet).
